How to read the dimensions of your tyre.
There are a set of numbers and letters that relate to the size of the tyre on the sidewall of your tyre for example 205/65R15 H

There are a total of four pieces of information required.

1) 205 is the width of the tyre in millimetres
2) 65 is the tyre profile or aspect ratio in this case 65% of the width
3) 15 is the diameter of the wheel in inches
4) H is the speed rating of the tyre
The R stands for radial [almost all tyres are now radial]

The belt keeps everything in sync so your valves open and close when the pistons are in the relevant position.

Cambelts perish with age and can weaken if they come into contact with oil and other corrosive fluids.

There are a few vehicles where if the cambelt fails there will be no damage to valves or pistons. In most cases if your belt goes or slips a couple of teeth you will damage valves and maybe the top of your pistons as the valves will be opened as the pistons rise and bash into them, costly stuff!

If you have recently bought a car that you do not know the history off it is recommended you change the cam belt to be safe. In most cases the belt can be supplied and fitted for around £100

The week and year of manufacture of a tyre is always marked on the sidewall.

A tyre marked 3308 was manufactured in week 33 of 2008.

Manufacturers also mark tyres to show which factory they were made in, so they can track where and when a faulty tyre was made.

Where do I find this information on my tyre?

Find a string of numbers & letters close to the tyres bead usually starting with DOT. At the end of the string you will find the 3 or 4 numbers relating to your tyres age.

If your tyres have just 3 numbers they will have been made pre- 2000 and even if they still have plenty of tread on them we suggest changing as they may be subject to rubber corrosion.

You too might want to check when a tyre was made.

Tyre makers specify strict storage conditions for tyres, as they can deteriorate if these aren’t met. Signs of ageing can include cracking in the sidewall area, and discolouring if they come into contact with certain chemicals.

Tyres have protective chemicals impregnated into the rubber compound, released as the tyre flexes when you drive.
